Alpha Chapter hosts its annual AKA Week "Cultivating the Regal Legacy" for 2017

October has been a very busy month for Alpha Chapter, we kicked off the month with our annual AKA Week entitled “C.T.R.L, Cultivating The Regal Legacy. The week was geared towards encouraging attendees to look deep inside themselves and love the person they are becoming. The week started off with a Call to Chapel featuring guest preacher the esteemed Rev.Al Sharpton. The sorors of Alpha Chapter were able to meet with Rev.Sharpton and he wished them the best of luck in preparation for their week. On Monday, the event was entitled “Super Model” and focused on the battle between social media and self-love. Attendees were shown phenomenal women in history and how social media have tried to both uplift and bring them down. However, these women have been able to still be powerhouses and love themselves through the hateful comments. Tuesday's event was entitled “20 something” and it was a workout event that featured two instructors that taught yoga and meditation. This event aligned under our mental health initiative and introduced the guest of ways they can help relieve stress. Wednesday's event, “Love Galore”, was aimed towards increasing awareness on the importance of healthy relationships. Attendees were able to learn about ways to acknowledge abuse and how to protect themselves from any type of relationships that are deemed unhealthy. Thursday event “The Weekend” was similar to Tuesday's event in regards to managing stress. However, the event featured a panel of professional women who worked in a variety of fields such as media, education, and medicine, and they talked the importance of managing stress while having a full-time career. The women on the panel were all sorors, and 2 were XI Omega sorors Jennifer Thomas(Alpha Chapter SP ‘87) and Nadine Ead(Alpha Chapter SP ’77). To end the week of events on Friday, the Alpha Chapter Sorors held a can food drive, and were able to donate over 170 cans to the Capital Area Foodbank. This was truly an exciting week of events and the ladies of Alpha Chapter have received raving reviews from all attendees. This year they have made its goal to leave those in attendance feeling more confident and ready to take on this world.

Alpha Chapter Soror Nayo Campbell is Shining from DC to Hollywood

Nayo Campbell is a senior Journalism major at Howard University with a concentration in Broadcast. At the beginning of the summer Nayo challenged herself to come back to school having honed her skills as an entertainment reporter, and she did just that. She landed an internship shadowing DC News Legend Bruce Johnson at the local television station WUSA-9. She was able to work closely with Bruce to pitch, produce, write, and edit segments that aired on his nightly show “Off Script with Bruce Johnson”.

Along with this internship she was able to travel to Los Angelos, California to cover the BET Awards Weekend as well as the BET Awards. She was able to land interviews with the cast of the New Edition Movie, Irv Gotti, cast members of Blackish, and more. Following an exciting weekend with BET, Nayo traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana for the 2017 Essence Festival. Nayo was able to put Howards student run television network “Spotlight TV” on the map at Essence as she was able to get interviews with Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Cece Winans, Lance Gross, Tank, The cast of OWN’s Greenleaf and more. She was also able to cover different events in New York such as the Afropunk Music Festival and BET’s Black Girls Rock. Now that she has started her senior year, she is working hard serving as the General Manager and lead Entertainment Reporter for Spotlight TV as well as the Ivy Leaf Reporter for Alpha Chapter.

She recently secured an internship with the Washington Wizards for this 2017-2018 as their one and only Entertainment Intern. She is extremely excited to take her talents of Entertainment to the sports world and she is hoping that she will be able to land the job as the next Entertainment Host for the team. Nayo has had quite the successful summer, but she knows this is just the beginning of a long journey. She is thankful for the support of her line sisters and lovely sorors at Xi Omega.

Alpha Chapter Prepares to Launch
New Dimension of Leadership at Howard University

Alpha Chapter’s new Basileus, Soror Morgan Cross represented our chapter in Las Vegas Nevada, where she attended the 2017 Leadership Seminar from July 13th through 18th. She actively engaged in the Risk Management Summit, which was a full day of panel presentations for chapter basileui, Graduate Advisors and Membership Chairmen. The well-attended event (over 1,000 registered sorors) aimed to “empower sorors to take an active part in eliminating, reducing, and managing risk facing Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.” The participants in the summit discussed many of the risks and consequences that Alpha Chapter and our new executive leadership might encounter on our campus and in the virtual community. Soror Morgan said, “I was exposed with detailed knowledge about the situations I may face as a leader; and I’m eager to share the timely tips with my Alpha Chapter sorors at our Summer Planning Retreat.”

Alpha Chapter is super- excited about August! We are looking forward to an actionpacked month of events that include our Chapter Summer Retreat. Alpha Chapter has been eagerly preparing and awaiting the arrival of the HU Class of 2021 with volunteer programs to service at “Freshman Move-In”. “The Taste of Howard” will showcase Alpha Chapter’s step and stroll to promote Bison Spirit! Our annual “Sister to Sister” and “From Us To You” are also HBCU service programs geared towards getting freshman girls and boys properly acclimated to Howard University’s campus. This will certainly be a busy month, but we are excited to represent our organization and Howard University proudly!
